Leadership: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly (Part 1)

Every advancement professional who has management responsibilities should also understand their responsibilities to be leaders. The first part of this important interactive session will focus on the Good, the Bad, and the downright Ugly of leadership, and give you the necessary insights to emerge as a recognized leader within your organization. Topics will include how to motivate and inspire staff members through mentoring and celebrating successes.

Confronting and addressing dissention in the ranks is never an easy task for any leader. Managing personalities while moving your team forward can, at times, be challenging. However, your ability to inspire your team to effectiveness is a direct reflection on your ability to lead. This session will underscore the importance of building a team even through conflict.

Annual Operating Plans: How to Empower Employees through Strategic Planning and Expected Accountability

Coordinated, strategic planning allows a good operation to expand into a great operation. In this session, you will learn how to craft an annual operating plan that includes all areas of institutional advancement and will focus on: financial goal development, motivating your advancement team, establishing a shared understanding of advancement goals, and developing a calendarized plan to guide individual efforts. With careful planning and an understanding of the components of a well-orchestrated organizational plan, your team can attain its fundraising goals and set a new standard for excellence within your college or university. Examples of operating plans will be shared.

Understanding the Budget: Foundational Concepts You Need to Know
9 – 10:15 a.m.

Understanding complex budgeting processes is a critical skill that all emerging leaders need to know. This session will provide an overview of accounting practices that are common to higher education institutions, both public and private. Topics to be addressed will include current operations, physical plant funds, and endowment funds. Fundamental accounting concepts, terminology, definitions and financial reporting requirements relevant to colleges and universities will be discussed. Helpful handouts will be distributed during this session.

The Write Stuff: Honing one of the Most Important Skill Sets Necessary for Advancement to the Leadership Ranks

Effective development writing is an essential skill that must be honed and refined in order to achieve maximum success in your fundraising operation. This session will breakdown the necessary components needed to craft and compose effective fundraising appeals, proposals, and stewardship reports for your organization. Examples of well-crafted and less-than-well-crafted appeals will be shared and discussed.

The Road to the Vice Presidency: How to Prepare Yourself for Significant Advancement in the Profession

This panel discussion will focus on what university CEOs are looking for in the next generation of advancement leaders. Panelists will share what key skill sets should be developed, discuss the necessity of an advanced degree in achieving promotion goals, and insights on how to become indispensable to your President.

Plan the Work- Work the Plan

The session will focus on the importance of needs assessments and pre-campaign studies in developing an action oriented strategic plan.  Dr. Paul Gardner will give a historical perspective of development as the “grip and grin” era and the transition to the current use of technology and research to refine donor cultivation. Walt Eilers will highlight the relationship of researchand engagement techniques to develop a strategic plan that is functional and acceptable.
