Bailin’ Wire, Barbed Wire and Bubble Gum: Tax Code Basics All Development Professionals Need to Know

Whether your primary responsibilities in advancement are in the annual fund or in the principal gifts office, all fundraising professionals should be acquainted with the basics of what constitutes a charitable gift and how the way a donor makes a gift can affect his/her tax situation.  This foundational-level session is perfect for new development professionals, development professionals who have recently changed job responsibilities, or those who would simply benefit from a refresher on the subject.

Managing Return on Investment

With boards, administrators, and constituents demanding more accountability and transparency, this session examines ways that some institutions are measuring the return on investment for their fundraising programs, provides an analysis for these performance metrics, and calls into question the quality of an institution’s short and long-term goals.

Join Mark A. Petersen, associate vice president for development and alumni affairs, Southern Methodist University and Matt Ter Molen, associate vice president, alumni relations and development, Northwestern University, as they share their insight on this important topic.

Developing and Executing Purposeful Donor Cultivation Strategies

Each donor is different, with an individual set of personal and philanthropic goals and passions.  Explore the different ways you and your colleagues can craft effective action plans that help move donors closer to making significant gifts to your organization.  New development professionals and development professionals who have recently changed job responsibilities will benefit from hearing new or different ideas on the subject.

Fund Raising, Frog Gigs and the Three Musketeers:  Working With All of Your Colleagues to Increase Giving

Successful fundraising requires that development professionals work collaboratively with colleagues or allied professionals with specific responsibilities in development disciplines different from their own.  This session explores the ways in which your colleagues can help you be a more successful fundraising professional, and how you, in turn, can do the same for them.  This session is perfect for new development professionals or development professionals who have recently changed job responsibilities.

Risk and Uncertainty in Capital Campaigns
9 – 10:15 a.m.

This session examines the important and distinctive roles “risk” and “uncertainty” play in strategic decision-making in capital campaign planning and execution.  The presentation will use examples to illustrate how to define, measure, and manage risk to make better decisions as to goal-setting, budgeting and related areas.  Because this approach to defining risk is highly quantitative, this session is recommended for development professionals with an affinity for formal analysis.

Gift Acceptance Policies:  Why Your Organization Needs One and How to Evaluate Your Current Policy

You know they’re out there.  Some gift opportunities can be real stinkers, and can cause your organization many problems.  This session explores the practical importance of having an up-to-date organizational gift acceptance policy, how having the right policy can protect you and your organization from gifts gone bad, and how to evaluate your current policy’s effectiveness.  This session is designed for development professionals with five years or more of experience who have program management responsibilities, or who would benefit from a deeper knowledge of the subject.

Learning to Look a Gift Horse in the Mouth

An interactive session based on case studies from real life and beyond that will help your organization know how to recognize and address ethical issues that can arise in any type of gift opportunity.  This session hopes to give you insight into ways you can protect both your organization and your donor, and is especially designed for both new development professionals and development managers at any level of responsibility.
